Nash stared at Clay’s dead body.

Stupid kid, he thought, shaking his head. He just couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Blood flowed out from the hole in the dead guy’s forehead, pooling in the dirt around him. Grabbing Clay by his ankles, Nash dragged his body toward the nearby shrubs, heaving the corpse into the tangle of mangroves. He snatched the car keys from Clay’s pocket, then took one more look at the dead agent.

He turned and used his foot to clear dirt over the blood trail, then kicked piles over the pool where Clay had fallen. Ready to go, he strode to the driver’s side of the Altima. It was far from a perfect crime, but Nash didn’t care. Thanks to a deal he’d made long ago, he’d be a thousand miles away before anyone figured out what had happened. Lying on a beach somewhere, counting his cash.

Starting up the Altima, he turned around, drove back down Seppala, then cruised onto US-1. Heading east, he slipped out his personal phone and thumbed a number.

“Time for you guys to pay up,” he said after the call was answered. “I’ve been covering for you and your operation for long enough. And now I’ve dealt with the agent who was breathing down your necks. I’ve got all our intel on the investigation into your operation.” He eyed the stack of folders on the passenger seat. “So here’s the deal—I hand it over, and you guys pay me what I’m owed along with a one-way ticket out of the country.”

There was a long pause. Growing irritated, and already flustered, Nash said, “Hello? You hear me, boss?”

“I hear you,” a man replied. His vice was mature and commanding, and he had a strong Italian accent.

“I mean it, sir,” Nash said. “This has gone on long enough. I want my money and I want out now. Or I’ll blow the lid on this whole thing, understand? I don’t care if I go down with you.”

There was another pause, and just as Nash was about to say something, the voice on the other end returned.

“You have done well,” the man said, slowly and articulately. “And you will be rewarded handsomely for your troubles.”
